Twelve in the morning. A new shift starts.
A vest of protection covers their hearts.
Somewhere a shot takes a life. A boy just died.
Soon a woman and mother will have deeply cried.
Drugs are sold. Slowly takes a life.
Maybe a husband, or son. Maybe a wife.
A woman sells her body. For very cheap pay.
Nobody ever showed her the truth. A better way.
Windows are broken. Property tagged.
Now, so bad youth have proudly bragged.
Bullets fly out of the window of a car,
Some impact close. Some very far.
Shooting to hit anyone they can.
Thinking this so makes them a man.
A man gets a call. It’s about his son.
This brutal robbery. Says he is the one.
Told to come to the hospital, he was needed.
The Father asked God to help. He so pleaded.
A helicopter flies low. Circles overhead.
An officer was shot. Sadly, he is dead.
People hear yelling from a house and neighbor calls.
A man beating his wife. She shoots him and he falls.
A woman on drugs screams loud in the night.
Everyone she sees, she begs them for a fight.
A boy bleeds in the street. A hit and run.
People stare. But is helped by only one.
A house is broken into. A man beaten raw.
All he could do is recall and say what he saw.
Man robbed at knifepoint. Took all he had.
Wedding ring of dead wife. is gone. His comrade.
A drunk man is wandering on a railroad track.
A loud horn sounds. Sadly, then a subtle smack.
A terrible car accident. Two trapped inside.
Another runs away. Quickly tries to hide.
Another car was jacked, a woman left on the street.
Sadly, she was raped. Then so brutally beat.
A man came along. Shot the rapist dead.
Illegally had the gun. So he hastefully fled.
Car crashes into house. Drunk driver is at the wheel.
No one inside is hurt. His broken arm he did not feel.
A car alarm sings. The pair grab and run.
The two do this often. Also, for fun.
This woman stands on a bridge to jump to her death.
Lady in uniform speaks to her with subtle of breath.
Explained that she too at one time wanted to die.
Came off the bridge. Both had a long cry.
The badge mostly has to clean up the mess.
But sometimes they are the ones who bless.
All the chaos they must whiteness through their eyes.
As the badge patrols the beat, they must always analyze.
When they joined the force, it was like signing a lease.
And when bad things ensue. They come. They are the police!
