Up out of bed, and into a rusty car.
Good thing, because his job is not far.
He helps open up and prepares this burger joint.
Only temporary. With vision, his future does point.
Wants to learn things, now out of his purview.
For now, he will be helpful to this food crew.
Will save his money, as he lives in his mom’s home.
Tries to live good. Doesn’t let his values roam.
He is used to serving. Giving great care.
As his mom is confined to a wheelchair.
Works the counter and register exchanging money.
Tries to keep upbeat, with a spirit that is sunny.
Something that strikes the customers as something very strange.
He’s the first cashier they saw, that in his head could make change.
A woman orders a meal. A hospital visitor pass on her chest.
Her husband is recovering from surgery, and now taking rest.
He wishes her well, and for her husband, a prayer.
Gives a subtle message that he really does care.
Hands her the food but doesn’t know what to think.
All he could do this time is to offer a free drink.
She gracefully declines the drink. Love is reciprocating.
Leaving a new friend here was sadly debilitating.
Moves over to the register to take another order.
Trying to keep his emotions within his border.
Still trying to give the customers attention and joy.
Working hard to be a Man, and not just a boy.
He learns from the teachings of Christ, how to perfect.
His compassion, to care, and develop self-respect.
Practicing this, in his humble job of hire.
To handle the heat from life’s crucible of fire.
The shift is done. He hopes to be home in a flash.
His last diligent duty is to take out the trash.
Drives his rusty car home to take care of his mother.
Another day it was, practice helping one another.
Kasey Dann.
